Marzamemi, its story

Cosa vedere a Marzamemi

I would like to start talking about the history of this beautiful village starting from its name.

There are several theories about its origin, many point to its Arab origin.

Given the origin of this town, probably an Arab derivation, it seems plausible to me that the name has the same origin.

What I personally find most convincing is that the name Marzamemi derives from “marsa” and “memi”, literally means small port.

Another theory is that the name comes from “marsà al-ḥamāma”, literally bay of turtles.

The history of this village is linked to the sea. Its position meant that this place developed primarily fas a fishing port.

As already mentioned, the origin of the village is almost certainly Arab (if you want to read more about the Arab period in Sicily you can take a look at this article).

It was the Arabs who established the tuna fishery which is the fulcrum of the history of this place.

The tuna fishery was one of the main ones in Italy.

The one we see today was planted during the 17th century during the reign of Philip IV and was then handed over to Baron of Calascibetta.

During the 1700s the following buildings were completed: the tuna fishery, the palace and the church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Carmelo Mount. Several houses were built there which were mainly used by sailors.

The history of this town continues to the present day following the route of the tuna fishery which was owned by different owners over time.

A noteworthy fact is the construction of the Marzamemi – Pachino railway during the Bourbon domination.

Marzamemi today, an important tourist artery

Today it is a destination with great tourist appeal.

Due to its geographical position and its architectural structure this place is definitely worth visiting.

The atmosphere is very particular and especially in summer it is filled with tourists from all over the world.

It is an enchanting place, with its cobbled streets, colorful houses and characteristic flowered balconies.

Every corner of this village offers a breathtaking view, which seems suspended in time.

Its main square is animated by restaurants, cafes and shops, which create a lively and welcoming atmosphere.

Its beaches are simply wonderful, with golden sand and crystal clear waters that invite you to take a refreshing swim.

The picturesque beauty of Marzamemi is a real pleasure for the eyes and a source of inspiration for artists and photographers.

The internal courtyard is the centerpiece of the palace, with a stone staircase leading to the prince’s rooms.

At the back there is a second terrace overlooking the Tonnara, the fishermen’s warehouse. The interior of the palace was rich in works of art, silverware and fine furniture, but during the Second World War the prince’s apartments were looted.
