Messina, the capital of the homonymous province, is the closer city to Italy on the island.

The city overlooks the Messina channel and is one of the three corners of the Sicilian triangle.

This city, like some others in the island, carries several centuries of history in its shoulders. The factor that has affected more its current appearance was the reconstruction of the city after the 1908 earthquake.
